The following “Observations” are excerpted from Chapter 2, We Humans,
Those who see suffer.
In our mirrors are the faces of our siblings.
The young have strong bodies and weak minds;
the old have strong minds and weak bodies.
Our mouths are quicker than our minds.
Nostalgia is selective.
Man: head. Women: heart.
Many problems.
Innocence vanishes.
That which we would be lost without we value most.
Credibility is fragile.
Human error is a sure thing.
We are reluctant to release that which gives pleasure.
Anything can and will be argued.
We covet our addictions.
We are all guilty; we are all innocent.
The old recall; the young anticipate.
Our competitiveness is exceeded only by our sex drive.
Emotions hold the trump card.
The obnoxious are unaware of their ‘gift’.
Power and goodness are brothers rarely.
Philanderers destabilize marriages; zealots destabilize countries.
Peace is a fragile state.
In both love and war, we abandon our rational minds.
Our minds feast on speculation.
We can convince ourselves of anything.
Greed kills.
We are variations of each other.
We would rather learn than be taught.
Incompetence is an ugly spectacle.
Both sides pray.
Accountability is the father of constraint.
Where there is progress, there is obstruction.
We nurture or abuse.
Wherever we are, we are within ourselves.
Everyone wants to make the rules.
The status quo evolves.
There is no cure for perfectionists.
Events conspire to create events.
We defend our tribe.
Hearts are irrational.
War breeds war.
What we think shows.
What can be misconstrued will be misconstrued.
The arrogant focus on their answers, not our questions.
We are driven by perceived self-interest.
Choirs compete.
The faithful have no use for logic.
Most enemies are imagined.
We are similar but far from identical.
We love most what is ours.
We are alternately shepherds and sheep.
